The Reverend Shawn Amos Takes Us to Church
A slim man wearing sunglasses takes the stage in a royal blue suit. His gray hat is embellished with a red piece of fabric. He opens a small suitcase. Inside the top portion of the suitcase is a sign that says "JOY." He takes the mic and just like that, the Reverend Shawn Amos transports us to a time when blues was great.
Rev. Amos is accompanied by three musicians. Tonight's concert is a multicultural affair. The bass player is from Brazil, the drummer is from Paris and the lead guitar player is from New York. All are talented and recreate that bluesy sound that most of us are familiar with and love.
The concert is filled with a combination of original songs as well as covers. Incorporating Muddy Waters, Memphis Minnie and even Janis Joplin, Rev. Amos educates concertgoers on music history as well as performs.
As the band is breaking it down, Rev. Amos is relishing in the sound. He dances and moves across the stage in yellow-gold shoes as he plays the harmonica.
Midway through the concert, Rev. Amos leaves the stage with a mic in hand. He walks around the crowd, stopping to hug a few people in the concert crowd. The song that he was previously singing ends and he leads the crowd in a rendition of, "Mercedes Benz." The tune made popular by Janis Joplin, was a crowd pleaser. As Rev. Amos returned to the stage, he gives a child a fist-bump.
In addition to spirited covers, Rev. Amos livens the crowds with original music. The newest album, "The Reverend Shawn Amos Breaks it Down," was released in February of this year. The album is filled with 21st Century Freedom Songs, according to the website.
"2017" is a song speaking to current events and the times that we are in. The song is a plea from Rev. Amos for listeners to, "open their hearts and mind," and think of what is really going on.
“Hate and fear ain’t no vaccine
We’ve got to think about what our children’s eyes have seen”
The Reverend Shawn Amos is a band working hard to preserve the blues sound and keep the songs of blues musicians alive. His concert experience is so much fun and brings the audience to their feet. I have posted the link to the website as well as the Youtube video of "2017."
