Falling in Love With Musician Sam Lewis in 3/4 Time
When my parents went to a Los Lobos concert, I was jealous. Live music has always been one of my favorite past times. My parents called the next day to detail the concert experience and said they had a new vinyl album for me to add to my collection. The new artist I needed to hear was musician, Sam Lewis. He had entertained the crowd as the opening act and had made an impression on my parents.
They told me that he had worked with John Prine and Chris Stapleton. Those are two reputable names in the business, so I knew he must be talented. If John Prine vouches for an artist, I am all in.
Sam Lewis presents his own style that can be described as Country, meets Americana, meets soul. His lyrics are meaningful and his melodies draw you in. In his 2015 album, Waiting On You Lewis varies his song choices from his request for communication and intimacy in the song, "Talk To Me," to his more upbeat song, "3/4 time."
“Well there’s something blowing in
I feel a change on the wind
And I don’t want to hear about the weather
You know it’s gonna rain again
Some day, whenever
Get behind me
Put your arms around me
And just talk to me”
The songs are instantly relatable and draw you in. In the case of the song, "She's a Friend," the tune that is reminiscent of an oldies soul/R&B song, gives you a feeling of delving into a personal situation. The lyrics are simple but meaningful.
“I was broken and broken down
In a little Tennessee town
Too hard a beginning
So I’m beginning at the end”
Vinyl collectors will tell you that a good album is one you can listen to all the way through without skipping a song. Trust me when I tell you, this IS a great album. You won't have any problem listening to the album in its entirety, and will feel like you know Lewis a little bit better when the album is over.
Now don't just take my word for it. In November of last year, Rolling Stone named him one of the the new country artists you need to know.
Lewis currently has two albums, 2012's "Sam Lewis," and 2015's, "Waiting on You." According to his website, his newest album, "Loversity," is set to drop May 4th.
